Pastor Rick: Can We Talk About Politics at Church?

by Pastor Rick Henderson

The title of this article is enough to trigger passions and ignite rage. Yet it is a serious question. Can we talk about politics at church? Should we talk about politics at church? Some of you may insist that it’s necessary because of the division facing our nation. For the same reason, others are just as adamant that we sidestep the topic completely. There is wisdom and value in both perspectives.

Fair-minded, reasonable people don’t fear honest conversations. They tend to fear conversations in which people are treated unfairly. Let’s be honest. We are not casual observers of political matters. It’s personal. Whatever your political views may be, they serve as the collision point of your past experiences, your hopes for the future, your priorities, and your faith. We feel strongly about issues we take personally. On top of that, it’s hard to think clearly when we feel strongly. So we’ve learned to keep the conversations to ourselves, our group, and our Facebook page.

What if the church was a place where we could talk about these things in a way in which everyone felt honored? What if we could talk about these things in a way in which people wanted to listen? What if we could talk about these things in a way in which our faith filter was more important than our political filter? If it’s possible for Jesus-followers to disagree politically, yet love unconditionally—wouldn’t that be a conversation worth having?

Beginning September 12 and 13, we will launch a new series called, Talking Points: The Perfect Blend of Politics and Religion. I’m looking forward to this series, and I hope you are too. This is the perfect series to invite a friend to attend an in-person service with you. This is the perfect series to invite a friend to your home, to watch online with you. This is the perfect series to host an online watch party.

I can’t guarantee your favorite candidate will win in November. However, the church will win or lose based on our behavior between now and then.

  • Week 1: One is the Win
  • Week 2: Choosing Sides
  • Week 3: Kingdom First
