Keys to the Dungeons

In Pilgrim’s Progress John Bunyan describes how Christian is captured by Giant Despair and is locked up in the dungeon of Doubting Castle. Christian and his friend Hopeful are naturally terrified so around midnight they began to pray and continue until daybreak. Suddenly Christian says, “What a fool I am to lie here in a stinking dungeon when I can walk at liberty. I have a key around my neck called “Promise” that will open any lock in Doubting Castle.”

Bunyan was illustrating the liberating truth that the promises of scripture are given to us to unlock the dungeons of despair in which we find ourselves. In this sermon series we will look at some of these keys called “promise” that can help us escape from Giant Despair and discover the delights of life with Jesus.
