• Go to the 8 DAYS OF HOPE website and register that you are coming. This must be done before May 19. If you are going to fly, be sure to indicate that on the form. There are many 8 Days of Hope websites, be sure to pick the right site.
If you need transportation, please make sure you include your travel information on your volunteer form. 8 Days will provide transportation to and from the New Bern airport. There are many airlines that fly in and out of New Bern. The airport code for this airport is EWN. When volunteering please make note of your travel itinerary.
If you prefer to drive to New Bern, it will take two long days. Also the work sites will be about 20 miles from your lodging.
8 Days will be providing accommodations similar to our previous trips. Church gyms and classrooms, segregated by gender, will provide you space to set up your own air mattresses, cots or foam pads that you bring from home. (Please keep the size of the air mattresses less than queen size.) You may also bring a tent and camp outside if you prefer. There will be gender segregated showers and restrooms available. There are RV sites nearby and plenty of hotels also. If you are coming as a family and desire to be housed together, we suggest you bring a tent, RV or pursue hotel accommodations.
1) Sleeping bag
2) Air mattress
3) Work clothes
4) Personal items
5) Tools (if you are driving)
Yes! Please bring any tools that you can, especially those that you would anticipate using. Air Compressors, ladders, drills, drywall tools, paint brushes…etc. Eight Days of Hope has outfitted a tool trailer and will be bringing it to supplement any tools you may not own.
The primary work will be the rebuilding of the uninsured damaged homes. The hurricane caused both wind and water damage to the homes. Almost all of these homes need to be rebuilt. This includes new electrical wiring, insulation, flooring, drywall, carpentry and paint. We are also in dire need of people who have mechanical and plumbing skills! Beyond home restoration there are many support jobs which include data entry, transportation, laundry, cleaning and food service. There is definitely something for everyone’s skill set!
