Hebrews Week 15: Because Jesus is Alive We can Obey God

Scripture:	Hebrews 11:8-22

Just as Paul did in Romans 4 and James in James 1, the writer of Hebrews draws on the example of faith from the life of Abraham to encourage his readers to trust God. Three scenes from the life of Abraham describe in practical terms what it means to trust God.

Hebrews Week 13: Because Jesus is Alive We can have Hope

Scripture:	Hebrews 10:19-39

The Easter story is resplendent with hope. Because of the resurrection, hopeless people become hope-filled people. This is very good news because what oxygen is to our lungs, hope is to our life. While others may look around the world and see only a hopeless end the Christian rejoices in an endless hope. In this passage the author of Hebrews urges us to, “Hold unswervingly to the hope we profess.”

Hebrews Week 12: Because Jesus is Alive We can be Holy

Scripture:	Hebrews 10:1-18

Many, if not all of us, regard the subject of holiness as either impractical or impossible. Yet one of the extraordinary results of the cross and resurrection is that, “We have been made holy.” This passage tells us how, and answers the objections we raise at the idea that we can be holy people.

Easter 2012: Meeting the Risen Christ - Again

Scripture:	Revelation 1:9-20

On Easter Day the risen Christ met at least 14 people. Before he ascended to heaven he appeared to more than 500 others. But that was then. What about now? Does Jesus still meet with people today? The glorious truth is that he does. John met the risen Christ again 60 years after the first Easter. What John saw and heard is a model for our own encounter with Jesus.

Hebrews Week 11: The Cleansing Power of Christ's Blood

Scripture:	Hebrews 9

It is hard for modern people living in the 21st century to appreciate why Christians emphasize the blood of Christ. Some find this subject distasteful and even barbaric. The writer of Hebrews wants us to understand the eternal significance of the blood of Jesus, so he provides four illustrations to help us grasp its wonder.

In the Scripture passage for today,k the author is presenting the case that Jesus is a priest forever like Melchizedek, just as a trial lawyer would present their case in a cort of law. So let's dive into this central teaching in the Book of Hebrews and celebrate what God has done throughout time.

The temptation to escape tribulation by turning back and renouncing their faith in Christ as great, so the author of the book writes to communicate two essential messages: “God is speaking to you,” and “Hold on to your faith.”

Scripture:	Hebrews 1:1-3

Today we start a new series on Hebrews. This will feed our souls until June. Whenever I tackle a passage of scripture I follow the example of John Owen, one of the great English Puritans who was the Vice-Chancellor of Oxford University. He would write out questions that he wanted to ask the text.

God's Cell Phone Number

Scripture: Luke 11:1-10

Each January we have a Week of Prayer at Autumn Ridge. This is certainly not the only time we pray, but we have found that if we begin the year in prayer it is easier to continue in prayer. We know that nothing worthwhile can happen at Autumn Ridge without God’s blessing, guidance and anointing. Let’s daily yearn for the filling of the Spirit so that we will all be sensitive to the whispers of God. John Bunyan reminds us that, “Prayer is a shield to the soul, a sacrifice to God, and scourge to Satan.” In this passage, God gives the Prophet Jeremiah some wonderful encouragement to pray.

The Rest of God: What Does the Sabbath Mean Today?

Scripture: Matthew 11:25-30

On the seventh day of creation God rested. It must have been hard work to create the entire universe, so God deserves a good rest. But as Christians, the God that we worship is limitless. He didn’t need to rest, but he chose to rest. Later God called this rest Sabbath and he gave humanity guidelines for what Sabbath is supposed to be. Over the centuries our idea of Sabbath has been altered. Today we will explore God’s reason for giving us the gift of Sabbath rest and how we can make it real for our own lives.

Missions Festival Week 2: The Hole In Our Gospel

Scripture:	Matthew 19:16-22, Matthew 25:31-45

Being a Christian involves both a personal and transforming relationship with God and a public and transforming relationship with the world. God wants each of us to change our world by caring for disadvantaged and powerless people. When we love our neighbor as ourselves we experience the complete life and deep joy that Jesus offers us. A number of practical opportunities to care for the needy in Rochester and around the world are described.

Missions Festival Week 1: The Bible In My Heart Language

Scripture:	Psalm 119:25-40

When you walk into a Christian book store to buy a Bible the selection can be overwhelming. Thousands of hours and dollars have been invested into giving English speakers the very best materials to study the Word of God. But around the world the Bible has yet to be translated into over 2000 languages. As Christians we believe that God still speaks today through the pages of Scripture. How can we be a part of spreading God’s message through Bible translation?

Hot Potatoes: How Do I Know I Am Really Saved?

Part 1 in a 4-part series on difficult questions of faith

Scripture: 1 John 5:1-13

The Christian faith is challenging, so it raises lots of questions. We must never be afraid of these. God wants us to worship him with our whole mind. In the gospels, Jesus welcomes honest inquiry. Each stage of Christian growth brings new queries. Over the years I have been asked hundreds if not thousands of questions. In this new series we are going to address four of the most popular. We begin by looking at how the Apostle John answers, “How do I know I am really saved?

Part 5 in a 6 week series on our Core Value of Community

Scripture:	Hebrews 10:24-25

“And let us consider how we may spur one another on toward love and good deeds. Let us not give up meeting together, as some are in the habit of doing, but let us encourage one another – and all the more as you see the Day approaching.” Hebrews 10:24-25

We need each other. We cannot make it on our own. Discipleship is a commitment to connect in an authentic intentional spiritual relationship with another. God calls us to get together regularly to encourage and to motivate each other to live vibrant lives of service and faith. With us being one day closer to the day of Jesus' return and our ultimate victory on the horizon, we should be motivated even more to help and to encourage each other. It is vital that we are connected and have a sense of belonging to the Body of Christ.

Part 2 in a 6 week series on our Core Value of Community

Scripture:	1 Peter 3:15

Community is one of the vital values of Autumn Ridge. We want everyone to belong because God wants everyone to belong. In this series we are examining what it means to belong to the community of the faith. Peter tells us, “Always be prepared to give an answer to everyone who asks you to give a reason for the hope that you have. But do this with gentleness and respect.” Today we look at the nature of this hope that we are to share with others.

But do this with gentleness and respect.” Today we look at the nature of this hope that we are to share with others.</itunes:summary>

Scripture:	1 Peter 2:9 KJV

We have chosen the Grand Opening of The Center to launch a new series on community. We long for The Center to be a place where thousands of people find friendship with God and with others. Today we reflect on why God’s people are called to live differently.

Towards a Loving Marriage: Hope and Healing for Hurting Marriages

Part 8 in a 8 week series on Marriage

During our series we have seen that God created marriage between a man and a woman to be a wonderfully intimate, lifelong friendship that is to be a picture of Christ’s passion for his church. Yet we all know that ideal does not always work out in the real world made up of fallen men and women. Far too often our marriages bring pain rather than pleasure. Today we will look at what Scripture has to say to these hurting marriages.

Towards a Loving Marriage: Conflict in Marriage

Part 7 in a 8 week series on Marriage

Have you ever wondered what Adam and Eve’s first fight was like? Since humanity’s fall into sin, conflict has been a problem. Conflict is a part of life. As people we disagree, we hurt one another, and we work at coming to resolution together. There is no greater potential for conflict to cause harm than within the covenant bond of marriage. Marriages can be destroyed if we allow sin to poison the way we approach conflict. But when we learn to fight fair and learn to place conflict under the reign of Jesus Christ, grace may abound. The way we resolve conflict as husbands and wives can lead to greater intimacy with one another in marriage.

It has been said that we think more about sex than any other subject. That is understandable, for none of us would be here without it. So we are not surprised then that God has much to say about sex and the vital role it plays in a happy, loving marriage.

Parents, please use discretion before allowing children to listen to this message.

Towards a Loving Marriage: The Benefits of a Good Marriage

Part 3 in a 8 week series on Marriage

There have been numerous studies showing the benefits of having a good marriage. We see the benefits from a healthier life emotionally, physically and spiritually to creating better communities and healthier children. King Solomon lays out three benefits to a good marriage in today’s scripture passage. Once again, our purpose in life is to glorify God and grow in the grace and knowledge of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. These three areas will help us in our pursuit of this purpose and also in giving us the marriages God designed for us.

Summer of Love: Loving Obedience

Part 3 in a 6-week series on 1 John

Because of the amazing love of God, I am now a holy child of God. One day Christ will return in power, and the sight of his majestic holiness will complete the spiritual transformation he began in me at the moment of my salvation. Until that time, I must devote my-self to sanctification, the purifying process of spiritual growth that comes through prayer, Bible reading, and Christian fellowship.

The devil presently holds the unregenerate in slavish bondage to sin. He viciously accuses me to my face and before the throne of God, but he has been completely vanquished by the work of Christ on my behalf. The angels of God war against the devil, and Jesus Christ, the Son of God, stands before the throne of God in heaven to defend me as righteous, holy, and blameless in his sight.

I walk each day in the unrelenting light of God’s presence. I am completely forgiven of all my sins, completely free not to sin, completely sustained by Christ’s abiding presence, and completely confident of eternal life in heaven.

The presence of the Holy Spirit in my life is the seal of my inheritance as a child of the Most High God. I claim it now as my own and will possess it fully on the day of Christ’s return. Thanks be to God! Amen.

Summer of Love: Loving the Light

Part 1 in a 6-week series on 1 John

"God is light.” 1 John 1:5. What does this verse mean? Why does John utilize this particular metaphor? How does the comparison of light and darkness help us to understand God’s relationship to humankind? These are just a few of the questions that beg answers.

1 John is a book about love, but not just any love. Perfect love. God’s love. Our response of love to God. As we begin a new sermon series called The Summer of Love today we will gain from John’s perspective of Loving the Light. John asks the timeless question: Is love the most important value? God invites us to wrestle with his truth in a way that not only clarifies our doctrinal teaching, but also captures our hearts and defines our lives.

“God is light.” 1 John 1:5.

God invites us to wrestle with his truth in a way that not only clarifies our doctrinal teaching, but also captures our hearts and defines our lives.</itunes:summary>

and the fellowship of sharing in his sufferings, becoming like

In the resurrection of Jesus, we hear God speaking louder than at any other time in history. What he says tells us profound truths about himself, ourselves, and our world.

The Victory of the Cross

One of the most delightful pictures of the cross is summed up in the Latin phrase, “Christus Victor,” which speaks of the victorious Christ. It is a lovely idea but is it true? The cross didn’t look like a victory at the time, and as we look around the world today not much has changed. Christians often feel more like losers than winners. The Colossians faced this challenge, so Paul explains how the cross provides a victory which impacts all of life.

The Glory of the Cross

Paul wrote the book of Galatians to a group of young converts who were struggling to understand the significance of the cross and its impact on their daily lives. Not only did they have to deal externally with the influences of living in a pagan, pre-Christian culture, but they were being heavily influenced internally by false teachers who believed salvation was a mix of God’s grace coupled with the human effort of obeying Old Testament Law. Paul wrote to remind them that the sacrifice of Jesus on the cross was all-sufficient, both for their salvation and the daily living out of their faith.

The Folly of the Cross

Today we start a short series on The Cross of Christ. There are three good reasons for doing this.

First, IT IS LENT
This is the period leading up to Good Friday and Easter when we reflect on the meaning of the cross.

Second, IT IS THE THEME OF THE GOSPELS
All four gospels devote more space to the crucifixion than any other event in the life of Jesus.

Third, IT IS THE PREACHING OF THE APOSTLES
They are constantly speaking about the cross.
Paul never mentions Christmas once in his preaching or his writing. It is the cross that is central.

No matter what the problem facing the New Testament church it appears that the answer is always the cross.

Little Faith

In a Christmas Eve letter to friend Arthur Greeves, Oxford don C.S. Lewis admitted his own poignant struggle with doubt. Wrote Lewis, "I think the trouble with me is lack of faith. I have no rational ground for going back on the arguments that convinced me of God's existence: but the irrational deadweight of my old skeptical habits, and the spirit of this age, and the cares of the day, steal away all my lively feeling of the truth, and often when I pray I wonder if I am not posting letters to a non-existent address. Mind you I don't think so the whole of my reasonable mind is convinced: but I often feel so." We are not alone in the struggle with faith and doubt as Jesus own disciples often shared this struggle. Those who saw Jesus perform miracles with their own eyes were still challenged with little faith. Today we examine some reasons for these struggles and look to God's promises about how we can grow more steadfast in our faith.

2010 Missions Festival: A Mosaic of Missions

The Bible is the story of God creating a beautiful mosaic of his mercy, using people who have been transformed by the power of the Spirit. Missions is the name we give to the task of completing this mosaic under the direction of the Master Artist. The story starts in Genesis and concludes in Revelation. Today we look back at how it began and look forward to the final masterpiece.

Martin Luther's Great Discovery

In 1517 Luther stood at Halloween. That line of doggerel is an easy way to remember than on October 31, 1517, Martin Luther, a Professor at Wittenberg University in Saxony Germany, nailed to the door of the Castle Church what he called, 95 Thesis for Disputation Concerning Penance and Indulgences, in the Desire and with the Purpose of Elucidating the Truth. This action, 493 years ago this weekend, came to be known as the birthday of the Protestant Reformation. The word "Protestant" is derived from the Latin words "pro" meaning "for" and "testare" meaning "to witness."

A Fresh Start

On New Year's Eve we have the opportunity to reflect on the year that is behind us and look ahead to the next year. How has God moved in your life? What blessings will He bring next? What shape will God's grace take next year for you and your loved ones? These are some of the questions to consider on New Year's Eve. Tonight we will reflect on how Christ meets us in the past, present, and future.

Waiting on the Lord

We begin the New Year by spending a week in prayer. Our theme is Waiting on the Lord. Few, if any, of us enjoy waiting, so it may be surprising that God regularly commands his people to wait on him. Today we will explore what this means. I hope it will result in one of the most spiritually strengthening prayer weeks we have ever had.

The Story of a Bible

John Bunyan called the Bible "The Best of Books." Today we start a new series examining how Scripture has changed the lives of individuals and nations. Four hundred years ago the King James Version of the Bible was published. This translation of God's word has had a greater impact than any other book in history, so it is appropriate we commemorate this milestone.

John Bunyan referred to the Bible as "The Best of Books." In this new series we are going to look at what the Bible says about the Bible. We begin with the story of Moses receiving the book of the law. We notice what happened at this significant time in salvation history. It imparts important truths about God and his word.

Finding the Book

Last week we saw Israel receiving The Book of the Covenant. In their excitement they promised to obey it. Sadly their enthusiasm waned and the book was neglected and eventually lost. In our passage today we see the difference the Bible makes, both by its absence and its presence, when King Josiah finds the Book of the Law in the rubble of the temple and reintroduces it back into the life of Judah.

What do you do at the completion of a building project? That was the challenge facing Nehemiah after the walls of Jerusalem had been rebuilt, and it is the challenge facing us once the CENTER is completed later this year. This eighth chapter of Nehemiah provides a biblical answer. On this Future Directions Weekend it also reminds us why we do what we do at Autumn Ridge.

Interpreting the Book

History is filled with disastrous stories of people who misunderstood the message of Scripture. They include the followers of Jim Jones who drank the Kool-Aid in Guyana, and the Branch Davidians in Waco, Texas. One of the reasons why there are thousands of denominations in the world is because people have come to different conclusions about what the Bible says. Interpreting Scripture properly is essential if we are to understand the full truth of God's Word. In this passage, Jesus interprets part of Isaiah 61.

Before we look at God's word I want present an item of church business. The matter concerns The Center and the direction we should go from here. Our desire in waiting on God in prayer is that we will be likeminded so that we go forward together under the banner of Jesus Christ. Please use the next few weeks to pray and talk together so that we may discern the will of God.

Enriching the Book

After reading through the Bible, some people comment that the Old Testament is very different from the new. One heretic of the past even suggested they had been written by two different gods! As Christians we believe that all Scripture is inspired by God. Yet we sometimes have difficulty connecting law and grace. For example, what is the role of Old Testament law in the life of a New Testament Christian? We find the answer in the Sermon on the Mount. Jesus begins by assuring us that he has not come to abolish the law but to fulfill it. He then takes six areas of Old Testament law and demonstrates how they are fulfilled in him.

<itunes:summary>After reading through the Bible, some people comment that the Old Testament is very different from the new.
Understanding the Book

The Bible is sometimes hard to understand. We can identify with the Ethiopian's comment to Philip when he said, "How can I understand what I am reading unless someone explains it to me?" The encouraging message of this splendid story is that God wants us to understand his word. He will go to great lengths to ensure that someone can explain his truth to us. This passage has much to say to us about evangelism, obedience and even baptism, but primarily it tells us about God.

Circulating the Book

Known as The Apocalypse, the Book of Revelation is John's account of what the Lord's messenger revealed to him. It is a challenging book to interpret because we often get bogged down with questions of future prophecy, but the primary purpose of the Bible is to reveal God's message for spiritual relationship with himself. John had a message to the seven churches of Asia Minor (modern day Turkey) that still speaks to us today. Revelation is the only book of the Bible to begin in this unique fashion of multiple letters to various recipients. Today we will explore these Biblical truths from one of the more challenging parts of God's word.

Treasuring the Book

Peter is writing to suffering Christians. They are being persecuted because of their love for Jesus. They have been forced to leave their homes and are scattered throughout Asia Minor. When you have lost everything it is hard to be happy, yet Peter insists that they, "Greatly rejoice." How is this possible? We want to know for suffering is universal. We all experience it. The answer is found in the best of books, which we treasure all the more in times of turmoil.

Sharing the Book

The book of 2 Timothy is Paul's last letter before his execution so it shares his most important thoughts. We learn in this passage about the book shared with little Timothy by his grandmother Lois and his mother, Eunice. It was received by Timothy in his infancy. We see here the importance of sharing the best of books with our children. Scripture was greatly valued by Paul and in his final moments of life, he shares with us and encourages us to share it with others.
